Singulair (montelukast) is used to help prevent allergy symptoms by blocking leukotrienes. Leukotrienes can constrict the airways in your lungs, make it more difficult to breath, and result in an asthma attack. Singulair can be used to decrease allergy symptoms, asthma attacks, and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.

Singulair is not meant to replace a fast-acting asthma inhaler. It may take up to a few weeks for Singular to start showing results. People that are allergic to montelukast should not take Singulair. You should also make sure to tell your doctor if you’re allergic to aspirin or any other drugs.

Singulair is usually taken once a day. It comes in a 4 mg or 5 mg pink chewable tablet, a 10 mg tablet, or 4 mg of oral granules that can be mixed into applesauce, ice cream, mashed carrots, etc. Just swallow the tablet with a full glass of water or if it’s the chewable version, make sure it’s chewed completely before swallowing. If you miss a dose, don’t double up on the medication. Just take the tablet on the next regularly scheduled time.

The tablets should be stored at room temperature. Avoid exposing them to moisture or heat.
